Springhurst Primary School will take part in two years of hands-on food education through a partnership between VicHealth and the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation.

Nationals' MP for Ovens Valley, Tim McCurdy, said the partnership will embed practical, inclusive food education at the school, helping students develop lifelong skills in growing, preparing and enjoying fresh, seasonal food.

He said the school community had advocated for extra funding and he was pleased to have assisted in this process.

"The Kitchen Garden Program aims to build confidence, resilience and healthy habits in young people, with benefits that extend well beyond the school gate," Mr McCurdy said.

"The school will use the funding to enhance garden spaces, support food security, strengthen a whole-school approach to nutritious food and create opportunities to share fresh produce with the wider community."

Mr McCurdy said the school will receive a two-year Kitchen Garden Program membership and a $1500 equipment grant, which includes curriculum-linked lesson plans, professional development and tailored support to help educators deliver engaging food education.

It will also join the Vic Kids Eat Well program, receiving guidance from local health promotion professionals on boosting access to nourishing food and drinks in their school environment.
