Wangaratta Players are heading back to school

THE Wangaratta Players' next production has been cast and is set to hit the stage in June with five huge performances.

Based in the 60s, Catholic School Girls follows the story of four young students at an American Catholic school and four nuns.

Four talented women have been cast for the dual roles: Lyndal Perry as Maria-Theresa and Mary Germaine, Christine Duff as Elizabeth McHugh and Mary Thomasina, Shoshanna Griffin as Wanda Sluska and Mary Agnes, and Kirsty Woods as Colleen Dockery and Mary Lucille.

Director Gillian Leonard said she is "thrilled" the production is now under way.

"After last year’s disastrous events it's great we are now able to move forward in life and particularly, in theatre, and present this play for the people of Wangaratta," she said.

"It is a play that requires both talent and experience and I think I can honestly say if one was to combine the years each of the cast has been involved in live theatre, it would span at least 60 years.

“Each cast member plays two characters that are developed through the play which is a challenge; we’ll be using minimal props as it’s really all about the characterisation.

"To say that we are all excited and looking forward to this production would be an understatement; it's been too long since we 'trod the boards'."

Cast member Kirsty said she's looking forward to getting back into theatre after some time off.

"I've been a member of the Players for quite a while but because of extra study and other things I haven't been directly involved in productions for a few years," she said.

"I had a call from another local director who said it could be a good way to get back involved so I looked it up and it sounded like quite a good challenge.

"Playing two vastly different characters will be so interesting, for both me and the audience I think.

"The small ensemble cast is also a good way to get to know each other well, build some good friendships and network.

"It's a great play for players to start with again after the time off last year; it's a really strong group of people involved with lots of acting experience so I'm really looking forward to working with everyone and encourage people to come and see it."

The production will be held at The Stage Door on Friday, June 18 and Saturday, June 19 at 7.30pm with a Sunday, June 20 matinee at 2pm, and Frida...
