Few two–dayers for WDCA cricket

THE Wangaratta District Cricket Association (WDCA) has released its latest draft of the 2021/22 cricket season ahead of the planned start of play on November 13.

The draw, which is still subject to change, only includes two rounds of two–day cricket for the A grade and A reserve competitions.

The WDCA has contingency plans in place in the event of further interruptions to the season due to COVID restrictions, with the option of turning the two–dayers into one day matches in order to complete the draw.

The association is aiming for every team to play each other at least once, in order to have a fair competition.

According to the new draw, the Ovens Valley A grade side will travel down to Lords in Mansfield to play Delatite on November 13, whereas the A reserve side will host Delatite at McNamara Reserve.

Ovens Valley United president Tony Cuskelly said having only tw0, two–day matches was confusing.

"It makes no sense, really, having just two two–day games, but I would think they've done that just out of the idea of if we lost time due to a COVID lockdown of some description," he said.

"Ultimately it is a one day season, by the look of it.

"We would expect to be playing one–day final at Ovens Valley, that's for sure.

"And when we look at the draw, essentially what we're thinking is it just gives a bit of insurance if there is a lockdown of some sort we've got an extra week to play finals."

Training has been progressing well for the Tigers, with more than 35 players on the track on Saturday, while complying with COVID limitations.
