Magpies clipped by Wanderers, still claim top spot

WANGARATTA Magpies sit on top of the combined A grade WDCA ladder after round 12, despite a three wicket loss at the hands of Beechworth Wanderers on Saturday at Baarmutha Park.

The Magpies were bowled out on the last delivery of their 151 run innings, the Wanderers surpassing the total with three wickets still in the shed and seven balls remaining.

Winning the toss and electing to bat, the Magpies were in trouble early after opener Ryan Malcolm was knocked over by Richard Worcester for a duck off five deliveries.

After Pranav Menon fell for eight, it was up to skipper Jack Davies and Jimmy Thewlis to get the innings back on track.

The pair put on 65 runs before Thewlis was dismissed for 39, and after incoming bat Cooper Matheson was run out for seven, the Magpies were sitting at 4/116.

Davies tried to stick around as wickets fell around him, but after he was run out for 45, the Magpies scraped a few more runs together before being dismissed, the target for Beechworth set at 152 for victory.

Kayde Surrey ripped through the Magpies with the ball, taking 4/23, with Matt Ryan's figures of 3/31 going a long way in limiting the total.

Surrey and Ryan backed up their stellar bowling with the willow, getting the Wanderers the start they needed with a 62 run first–wicket partnership.

Ryan's dismissal for 21 and a brief cameo from Clancy Ellet brought Brenton Surrey to the crease, where the brothers belted the Magpies all over Baarmutha Park, bringing the total up to 146 before they were both dismissed within two deliveries of...
