Great weekend for Wangaratta hockey

WHAT an amazing weekend for the Wangaratta Hockey Club.

It started Friday evening with the under 14 boys playing in Albury then followed up Saturday morning with the under 14 girls, under 12 boys and under 12 girls playing in Wangaratta.

The seniors also made an appearance on the Wangaratta field Saturday afternoon.

under lights against a strong Magpies team.

The under 14 boys played under lights against a strong Magpies team but were a lot more cohesive this week, which resulted in a 3-2 win.

Sam Couche had a strong game in defence while Luke Mercer had a busy game playing as an inner creating opportunities and space in the forward line.

Braxton Reid was a bit tentative playing on the wing in his first game but managed to make some good plays and score some touches on the ball.

Saturday morning saw the under 14 girls face North's.

Amilie Griffin played an amazing second game in goals and the tackling and passing skills of Georgia Anderson and Emerson Reid were a huge asset to the team.

The young ladies enjoyed their second game as a team and are starting to show some wonderful team work and skills on the field but despite being much improved a victory was just out of their grasp.

The under 12 girls were up next, running on as the combined Phantoms team with Falcons Hockey Club from Albury.

The girls were showing off their new shirts and show off they did, with Wangaratta's Kiana Lane scoring her first goal for the season.

The girls walked away with a 6-2 victory over Corowa United.

The under 12 boys had a brilliant game, had fun and worked as a team with outstanding performances from Rory Gibb in the midfield and Nicholas White on the backline.

Although they weren't able to come away with the victory the boys showed promise and had great fun.

The division three men were a formidable force with a 9-0 win against Wombats Hockey club from Albury.

The whole team operated as a group which is what made it so difficult for the Wombats to get through Wangaratta's defence.

Alex Ellem scored two goals for the game and is proving to be a great young player.

The division three women also played against Wombats Hockey Club and with goals from Sharon Watkins and Jess Meadows they took out a 2-nil victory over the visiting team.

These ladies are getting stronger and stronger every week, welcoming a new player to the team Jess Brown, who looked like she had been playing all her life.

The wins for the senior teams sees them move to second spot on the competition ladder. Well done to all the teams that played over the weekend.
