Bubble reforms

WANGARATTA and other Victorian border region residents are now bound by NSW rules when they cross the border as long as they haven't been outside the 'bubble' in the 14 days prior.

Despite restrictions easing for regional Victoria last Friday, those south of the border in the bubble were not permitted to enter NSW venues or businesses over the weekend, causing chaos at several NSW locations and private functions.

Common sense prevailed and the stay-at-home rule was lifted for border region residents at noon on Monday by order of the NSW Minister for Health, Brad Hazzard.

A spokesperson for Mr Hazzard said border region residents will be bound by the level of restrictions for each state and area when they travel across border.

Meaning, when border bubble Victorians are in their home state, they will have to wear masks when they cannot social-distance.

They will also be bound by the crowd and density limits applicable to regional Victoria but not when they enter NSW.

When Victorian bubble residents cross the Murray into NSW they can also now leave the stricter rules such as caps on social gatherings at the border.

But Victorian border region residents are also not allowed to travel anywhere in NSW other than the border bubble.

"We don't have any restrictions in terms of gatherings at the moment and there are no mandated masks except for very specific settings," the spokesperson said.

Wangaratta-based Ovens Valley MP Tim McCurdy took to Facebook on Monday saying he had a phone hook-up with cross border commissioner Luke Wilson.

"Common sense has prevailed and regional Victorians in the border bubble can visit NSW," he said.

"However, the ongoing restrictions don't help businesses that can't open like gyms and dance studios.

"We have suffered enough with these lockdowns and restrictions and there are other ways to mitigate the threat of coronavirus.

"The density limits are enough and hopefully the government gets rid of these caps that are forcing businesses to reduce trade or close because it's not worth their time opening.

"We're in pretty good shape and I think the one person every 2sqm rule is sufficient to keep everyone safe and people are well versed in what they have to do.

"Pubs like the Pinsent can hold more than 50 people so the cap restricts them while other venues are smaller and it doesn't affect them."

The Ovens and Murray Football Netball League will hold a double header at Lavington on Saturday, with Victorian border bubble residents able to attend the full card of Wangaratta Magpies versus Yarrawonga matches scheduled (see back page).

A Victorian border region resident means a resident of Victoria who usually resides in the border region.

The border region includes towns in the cities of Wodonga, Wangaratta and Benalla, as well as Indigo and Alpine shires (including Falls Creek and Mt Hotham resorts).
