Hume reopened as police investigate fatality at Avenel

Police are investigating a fatal collision on the Hume Freeway at Avenel early this afternoon which saw the southbound lands closed for over an hour, forcing vehicles to detour from Violet Town to Seymour.

Emergency services were called to Hume Freeway, near the intersection of Lambing Gully Road, after a truck went down an embankment and crashed into trees about 1pm.

Victoria Police said in a statement that the truck caught on fire following the crash.

The driver, who is yet to be formally identified, died at the scene.

Officers are working to establish the circumstances of the crash.

One southbound lane remains closed past the crash site south of Avenel.

Motorists must slow to 40km/h passing emergency services vehicles.

This lane closure is under the control of emergency services and will re-open when investigations are complete and it is safe to do so.
