Celebrating 70 years of friendship

PAT Knight, Yvonne McGuire, Beverley McKenzie and Valerie Witenden gathered at the Town and Country Tavern on January 23 to celebrate 70 years since they met while training to be nurses at the Wangaratta and District Hospital.

They first met on January 26, 1954, and since completing their training, Ms Knight said each of them went different ways to make use of their training.

“I did my training and then I did less than two years and then I got married,” she said.

“One of them went down to Melbourne and did midwifery, another was a district nurse in Myrtleford and Yvonne flew the coop to New South Wales and worked quite a few years up there as well.”

Ms Knight said despite their careers taking them in different directions, over the years they still stayed connected through letters and phone calls.

They eventually decided to hold reunions so they could see each other in person to reminisce on their time training together and discuss life events.

“We’re frequent callers on the phone; I think it’s very important and a bit nostalgic sometimes,” she said.

“We had some general reunions with some of the trainees at the hospital and then we decided to do our own little reunion.

“It’s quite emotional for us because we’ve all had problems and it’s so good to be able to get together and share a bit of time.”
