Ley voted in as first female Liberal leader

SUSSAN Ley is the first woman to lead the Liberal Party following a partyroom vote 29-25 over colleague and shadow treasurer Angus Taylor.

The 63-year-old MP for Farrer, in announcing her candidacy for the leadership, said it was clear the party "got it wrong" and Australia expects a change in direction and a fresh approach.

Ted O'Brien will take on the role of deputy party leader.
