Red Devils return to the pitch

WANGARATTA City senior women’s team takes the ground after a week off this Sunday, once again facing off against the Boomers at Willow Park.

Coach Shankar Menon said his team is rested and ready for a rematch.

“They were feeling well after the last game and are ready to go,” he said.

“We had about 18 turn up to training on Tuesday from both teams together, which is really good numbers.

“Most of the reserves and seniors were there, we had a really good session.”

The Boomers are sitting at the bottom of the senior women’s ladder with four losses and a draw.

The last time the teams went head to head was in round five, when a hat-trick from Bianca Mulqueen helped put the Red Devils on top 5-2.

“We’ve seen how the Boomers play; I don’t know if they had players missing from their side last time,” Menon said.

“If they put up the same side we will be prepared and we’ll try to push them as hard as we can.

“We would like to increase the score line a bit; maybe clean sheet this time around, that would be the aim.”

With just five teams in the competition, Menon said it can be hard to gain momentum and carry it from match to match.

“In one way it is easier because you can manage your injuries for your players,” he said.

“On the other hand, because of the low number of teams in the competition there are a lot of gaps between games which I don’t think is helping.

“When we have two or three weeks before the next game, it doesn’t really help; it’s like going back to square one.

“We just have to deal with it.”
