Getting it right for Mum

From hastily or over-prepared breakfast in bed to homemade cards and flowers, Mother’s Day is often a source of decision making that might not be all that difficult after all.

Personalisation on Mother’s Day is considered more than a trend, but the very answer to making the day special.

That’s according to recent research by card-making company VistaPrint, who surveyed mums across the country for their take on Mother’s Day.

For those really wanting to make a difference, 3-in-5 mums said the perfect gift doesn’t always come in wrapping paper – often, a heartfelt 'thank you' or a thoughtful gesture means the most.

Almost half of mothers surveyed would prefer quality time with their loved ones, while 1-in-10 simply want to feel recognised and appreciated.

But when it comes to giving a physical gift, it’s clear that personalisation is key.

Traditional favourites still hold strong – flowers followed by chocolates and gift vouchers – but personalised gifts and special dinners are becoming increasingly popular, reflecting the growing demand for meaningful, customised gifts that show time and thought went into the gesture.

Euroa florist Emily Crocker has been producing bunches of flowers over the last four years at The Nest on Binney Street and said the traditional chrysanthemum had not lost its popularity.

“I would say chrysanthemums are still the bulk of the flowers, but people often request others,” Emily said.

“A big stunning rose often works, and an Ecuadorian rose really works.”

For half of mums, the ultimate gift is something with long-term emotional value – like a photo book filled with memories they can revisit and treasure for years to come.

Interestingly, mothers don’t expect their loved ones to spend the earth making their day special, with over half expecting their family to spend under $50 or don’t expect a paid gift at all.

Emily’s solution to any decision before the special day is, as expected, straight forward.

“Our mothers work incredibly hard, and they deserve to be recognised with a big bunch of flowers," Emily said.

“Anyone who has a mum should get on down here, because they deserve it.”
