Too little, too late for Saints

MYRTLEFORD'S senior footballers will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's 13 point loss to Lavington under lights, going down 8.12 (60) to the Panthers' 10.13 (73).

The Saints were playing catch up for the first three quarters with co–coach Dawson Simpson calling the effort "disappointing".

"Full credit to Lavington and the way that they played, they were excellent," he said.

"We certainly want our players to play with that sort of energy and endeavour – that was the most disappointing thing on the night, that we were outworked and out–hunted by a hungrier team.

"The cleanliness wasn't there for our boys, there was a lot of fumbling, missing easy targets, dropping easy marks.

"Lavington brought the pressure and were able to capitalise on our mistakes, we were certainly behind with our cleanliness.

"It was disappointing because in the fourth quarter we cleaned all of those factors up – the endeavour went right up, the cleanliness, the desperation went up and we were able to kick five in a row."

The Saints were lifted up by standout performances from Kurt Aylett (27 disposals, two goals) and Murray Waite (three goals), leading with experience.

"Kurt Aylett and Murray Waite were exceptional, just some experienced players who are fantastic at hitting the spots, were very clean and were able to have a huge impact on the game," Simpson said.

"Those two boys, along with Matt Munro were fantastic in our last quarter, but they were solid all day.

"Ryan Crisp was another one who was very strong down back and saved us a lot, and came up on–ball in the last quarter and gave us a lift."

The Saints will reassess and recharge for their home game this weekend, taking on North Albury on Easter Sunday at McNamara Reserve.

Myrtleford had convincing wins over the Hoppers in the 2021 season, and will look to replicate those results this year.

"From what we've seen – and we'll look strongly at the North Albury game from the weekend – they're certainly bringing a lot of pressure, much like Lavington do," Simpson said.

"If we're off our game again, then we'll be up against it.

"We're pretty confident our boys were disappointed in the result and the way that we played, so we're looking forward for an opportunity to bounce back and rectify a few wrongs.

"They're going to be a hungry team coming out and trying to get a big win, so we've got to be at our best to beat them."

The reserves squad had an easier time of it, crushing Lavington 12.18 (90) to 7.2 (44), while the thirds snuck a win by a goal 7.8 (50) to 6.8 (44).
