THE Greta Cricket Club is looking to make cricket a fun and social occasion in order to attract and retain members for the upcoming season.

Greta held its annual general meeting last Wednesday night and made significant progress in filling all committee positions, something that has not been achieved in some years for the club prior to the start of a season.

The club is also excited about the prospect of bringing in an under 14s team for the upcoming season, after only fielding an under 12s team last season.

Club president David Allen said the club had great numbers in the under 12s and is excited to welcome in an under 14s team.

"We've got the two junior sides to come in this season, we could use a few more players to sure up the numbers but it's really good," he said.

"We're fairly confident we can chase up a few of the juniors' parents to step up on the committee to bring in more of a focus on the juniors."

On the senior side of the spectrum, Allen said the club will be learning off last season's premature decision to have a C grade team without a certainty on playing numbers, which saw the C grade team lasting only four games before forfeiting.

Instead, the club will look to stick with just a B grade team and consolidate the squad of players before adding another team.

"We want them (the players) to build a group together and stay together going forward in the years," he said.

"We're not going to make the same mistake as last season."

Allen said in order to retain players and juniors, it's going to be important to keep a fun and positive environment around the club.

"Our main focus is to get the club back to being enjoyable and really social, there was a marked improvement on that last year," he said.

"We're always happy chasing any support, sponsors or players and we're looking stable, which is good."
