THE weekend's round of netball featured plenty of action across the region, with crushing wins, narrow defeats, draws and milestone matches.
It was a historic weekend for North Wangaratta, with the first matches played on their newly refurbished netball courts at the North Wangaratta Reserve against Bonnie Doon.
It was a one sided affair in the A grade, with the Hawks going down 34–56, with coach Jess Hogan attributing the loss to a lack of cohesion withing the squad.
"There were periods of play which were good, however, it wasn't consistent enough to take out the win," she said.
"Bonnie Doon were quite structured in their plays, and they've got some great height which unfortunately North Wangaratta does not have.
"We were just outplayed on the weekend."
The new courts garnered praise from the home side and visitors alike.
"The courts are beautiful, the rings are really nice," Hogan said.
"Even just the setup, there's a lot of open space, in warm–ups you're not feeling as rushed.
"Obviously with just one court previously and not very much space to throw a ball around, it definitely improves it.
"The atmosphere was nice out there, the courts are beautiful, we're very happy with them."
Hawks Kelsey MacGibbon (B grade) and Ruby Lane–Gee (A grade) celebrated their 100th game in the gold and brown.
There were thrilling scenes out on the courts at Goorambat where the Bats came back from a five goal deficit in the final quarter to battle out a draw with Benalla All Blacks 36–36.
Goorambat A grade coach Amelia Skilbeck said the determination showed by her squad will take them far in the competition.
"I think we got off to a bit of a slow start and we were chasing our tails for most of the game, but it was a very close contest," she said.
"It was a great game of netball to be played and watched as well.
"The fact that we showed so much fight and never gave up, I feel like as a coach, that's a credit to our team that we've just got that fighting spirit to keep fighting on no matter what."
Shooting duo Jacinta and Chelsea Beavis, supported by club stalwart Kylie Relf, brought the Bats back into the contest against a powerful Benalla list.
In other matches, Moyhu took the points over Bright 56–26, Milawa handed Whorouly their second loss of the year, and Greta powered past King Valley.
