WANGARATTA Table Tennis Association is looking for new members to join the game that's been part of the city sporting fabric for more than seven decades.

The club dates back to 1949, which is a testament to its ability to connect with the community over so many years.

"The enjoyment and laughter is endemic," club member Michael Chambeyron said.

"Table tennis is great for fitness and improves hand eye coordination, flexibility and reflexes.

"We welcome anyone as long as they are willing to play, competitively or not."

Junior, senior and a very special rank called the Keenagers are available, with the latter being a noncompetitive division with the goal of providing older citizens with the opportunity to participate in noncompetitive table tennis games.

Michael, as a long term member of the Keenagers division, reminisced over playing with members well into their 90s.

"As we age sport has proven to be one of the most beneficial pastimes for our mental and physical health," he said.

"For anyone interested in trying out for junior, senior or Keenager divisions simply come down to the hall (at Wangaratta Showgrounds) and start playing."

The club is based at 2 Evans Street inside the main entrance of the showgrounds.

The first two sessions are free and equipment is provided, but don't hesitate to bring your own.

All players are welcome to come on Wednesday nights for competitions.

Juniors start at 5:30pm and seniors at 7pm.

Keenagers attend social mornings on Mondays and Thursdays where they will also be treated to a morning tea.

"It suits Keenagers to play in the mornings, with tea part of the social experience," he said.

Coaching is available to juniors and seniors on Wednesday nights from 6pm to 7pm.

Despite the presence of formal coaches more experienced players are always happy to help any juniors who need it.

"Anyone interested should know that all ages and genders are welcome as table tennis is fun for everyone," said Michael.

Further information on membership fees and tournament times can be found at https://wangarattatableten.wixsite.com/website.
