THE WDCA/Beechworth A grade ladies' team has tasted their first success against the Goulburn Murray Cricket powerhouse Echuca at the Stan Hargreaves Oval in Yarrawonga.
In the two years WDCA has played in the GMC, it was the first victory against the perennial powerhouse. The win also consolidates a top two position on the ladder with one game remaining for the WDCA team next week before a bye in the final round.
A top two position would guarantee a grand final spot and the opportunity to go one better this season.
Echuca won the toss and elected to bat on a superb wicket and ground that handled significant overnight rain and allowed the game to start on time.
It took just two overs to claim the first wicket to leg spinning dynamo Kaitlyn Ritchie with the score on five.
White bowled well in tandem with Ritchie, having figures of 0/7 off three overs with 14 valuable dot balls.
Ritchie had 1/17 off five overs.
Cath Wood in her third game was the next wicket taker finishing with 1/20 with the second wicket seeing Echuca at 2/20.
Each WDCA bowler contributed including captain Kate Burns 0/6 from six overs with 31 dot balls; Sophie Panozzo 0/16 from five overs; Alyssa Priest 0/19 off three overs while the Echuca outfit were chasing big runs.
Erin Bond from Delatite on debut bowled well against experienced players having 0/13 from two overs.
After 15 overs of wicketkeeping, Crystal Stevens took the ball and was able to take 2/8 from four overs to restrict Echuca to 4/113 from 30 overs.
WDCA/Beechworth openers Alex Randell and Crystal Stevens were both able to score runs against some quality bowling.
Both reached the 40–ball retirement rule with Randell scoring 18 and Stevens 19.
Cath Wood was able to continue the good form making 21 and Kaitlyn Ritchie scored 18.
The first wicket fell with the score on 61 and the second and third at 90.
When Ritchie was dismissed, the score was 101 from 28 overs.
With just two overs remaining, the WDCA team needed 13 runs.
Neve White and Kate Burns were able to add nine runs including a towering six from Burns before White was dismissed in the final over.
Burns and debutant Erin Brond worked the strike well and with scores level with two balls remaining, it was Brond who hit the winning run off the final ball to see the WDCA Beechworth secure the valuable win.
For the home team, the efforts from Bree Wojtowyez as keeper were valuable along with Alli McConchie who fielded the ball all day, diving to save boundaries on numerous occasions.
It was a complete team performance with every member playing their role and most of all just enjoying playing cricket.
Round nine action and the last home and away game for WDCA/Beechworth will see a home clash against Shepparton Youth Club United at a venue to be determined later this week.
