INLAND Rail is calling for artists for multiple public art opportunities comprising sculptures and wall art at the Wangaratta Railway Station. Expressions of interests are now open for sculptural work by a First Nations artist at the station entrance, two-dimensional work for the new underpass wall and sculpture work in the rail yard garden. The art has been commissioned as part of the heritage interpretation plan for the station - and local, emerging or mid-career artists are encouraged to apply. Curatorial themes, artwork locations and selection criteria can be found in the artist brief online. The local community can highlight the important stories they feel need to be told at the site at community workshops and drop-in sessions to be held in Wangaratta on May 27 and 28. Expressions of interest close at 5pm on June 10. Ed Walker, Inland Rail program delivery director B2A, said they want the Inland Rail work to leave an important legacy that acknowledges the cultural and heritage values of the Wangaratta community. “Artistic pieces that reflect the community story will be important to build a local connection with the transformed station site," he said. “I encourage local, emerging and established artists to express their interest in this exciting project.”
