THE North Wangaratta Community Group (NWCG) will hold its inaugural Australia Day celebration this Wednesday at the Wangaratta Clay Target Club.
The festivities will kick off at 10.30am with a different format to some of the other celebrations around the rural city.
"It's the first time we have celebrated Australia Day here in North Wangaratta," NWCG committee member Mike Glenister said.
"We won't be having a Citizen of the Year presentation, as our concept is a joint effort of recognising the history of the North Wangaratta area and the pioneers who have contributed to it.
"We hope to document and celebrate a different pioneer each Australia Day from now on."
Five storyboards have already been created and placed at various locations around the area including two at the Vine Hotel, one at Reedy Creek, one at the Bowser rail trail station and one at the sports reserve near the netball courts.
The current boards give a broader picture of the development of the North Wangaratta area over the years, however Mr Glenister said that they are looking to speak to the families and descendants of some of the pioneers to focus on their contributions specifically.
Names of such families are well known in the North Wangaratta area with Docker, Parfitt and Burke high on the group's list to contact.
For this year's pioneering and Australia Day celebrations, a collection of imagery of the existing signboards has been created and will be formally acknowledged, and it will then be put on permanent display at The Vine Hotel.
Morning tea will follow the acknowledgement of the pioneers and storyboards around 11am and a tour of the Wangaratta Clay Target Club's remediation works, which are being managed by the Rural City of Wangaratta, will be on offer for those who would like to join.
The group is grateful to the rural city for including them in their 2022 celebratory list and for more information, contact Marg Pullen on 0422 563 451.
