TORRENTIAL rain throughout the North East in the last 24 hours has resulted in a moderate flood warning along the King River, with minor flooding expected throughout the Ovens River catchment.
Mount Hotham received the state’s highest rainfall tally in the 24 hours to 9am this morning according to the Bureau of Meteorology (the bureau), with some 199mm falling at the mountain’s automatic weather station, while elsewhere in the Alpine Shire, Falls Creek received 149mm and the Upper Buckland received 167mm.
Further down the valley, the Buffalo River began to experience moderate flooding earlier today on the back of 103mm of rain, while Mount Buffalo (135mm) and Eurobin (77mm) also received significant downpours overnight.
Wangaratta’s automatic weather station at the Greta Road airport recorded 53mm of rain through to 9am, while residents at Tarrawingee and through the Wangaratta CBD reported upwards of 65mm during the same period.
The bureau reported moderate flooding would be possible throughout the King River from tonight, with the river gradually rising towards the minor flood level at the Docker Road bridge on Wednesday morning.
Whitlands received in excess of 115mm of rain through to 9am this morning, while Cheshunt (97mm) and Edi Upper (96mm) fell just shy of the 10cm mark.
The nearby Fifteen Mile Creek catchment also saw significant downpours, with 127mm at Archerton, 85mm at Greta West and 73mm at Greta South resulting in the creek quickly rising as it flowed into Wangaratta through the One and Three Mile creeks.
