MORE goes on at the Boorhaman golf course than just golf; it is the home of one of the only regional footgolf courses in Victoria.

Footgolf is a mash-up of traditional golf and soccer, and has been a part of Boorhaman for almost six years, since being set up by the secretary of the Boorhaman Golf Club Judy Byrne and her husband.

“Basically it’s the same rules as golf, except you’re kicking a soccer ball into a much larger 53cm hole,” Ms Byrne said.

“It only takes up half of the golf course; the holes are not as long as golf holes, otherwise you’d just end up exhausted.

“It actually started because my husband had just had a knee operation and he was sitting at home watching telly one morning and something came on about footgolf; Leonardo Fernandez is the director of Footgolf Australia and he was talking about it.

“At that stage there was only about three courses in Australia.

“Anyway, we did some investigating and decided that yes, we could do it.

“Leonardo came down at Easter time almost six years ago and laid out the course for us and with a lot of voluntary help and hard work, we got it happening.

“It’s kept our little golf club going, because if we didn’t have footgolf I don’t think our golf club would still be there.”

Ms Byrne said that the appeal of footgolf is that it can be played by absolutely anyone, regardless of skill level.

“We’ve had buck’s parties, hen’s parties, birthday parties, corporate functions, celebrations, walking groups; you name it, we’ve had it here,” she said.

“We’ve had people from age four to 94; we actually had a 94 year old woman play a round one time.

“It’s something that everyone can do, if you can kick a ball.

“And it’s fun too; it’s not frustrating like golf, it’s just fun.”

The Boorhaman golf course is open for footgolf 24/7 and ball hire is available if required.

“We’ve got it set up like a self-serve, there’s an honesty box there,” Ms Byrne said.

“You can either pay by bank transfer or you can put cash in a little black box; most people are very honest, which is good.”

Prices to play footgolf at Boorhaman golf course are $10 for adults, $5 for kids, and an extra $5 for ball hire if needed.
