A 477-TONNE superload carrying an electrical transformer is making its way from Glen Waverley to Wodonga over three nights.

Each leg of the journey will take place between 10pm and 5am to minimise the impact to other motorists.

Night one brought about temporary lane closures along Springvale Road, Doncaster Road, Manningham Road, Williamsons Road, Fitzsimons Lane, Main Road, Lower Plenty Road, Greensborough Highway, M80 Ring Road Altona-bound then the Hume Freeway before the load pulled over at the Beveridge rest area.

On night two, the load travelled north along the Hume Freeway from Beveridge, arriving at the Wangaratta rest area by early Monday morning.

See Craig Hamilton's video below.

The load will then continue north along the Hume Freeway towards the New South Wales border from 10pm Monday.

During this final leg of the journey, the superload will move into the southbound carriageway through Wodonga West before leaving the freeway onto Melbourne Road and Melrose Drive, finally pulling over on Bandiana Link Road by 5am on Tuesday.

To allow the load to move to the wrong side of the Hume Freeway, a temporary closure will be in place from High Street to Melrose Drive, Wodonga West.

Southbound drivers will be held for 5 to 10 minutes so the load can pass.

The superload is 125 metres long and travels at speeds of up to 40km/h. When travelling over bridges or around corners, the load will slow to around 5kph.

Due to its 5.8-metre width, this superload may take up the entire width of some roads, however, there will be limited opportunities to pass under supervision of the specialist support crew.

We ask motorists to be patient when encountering the load in transit, and to follow the direction of the traffic controllers escorting the load.

Traffic management officers and load escorts will accompany the superload for the entire journey, making sure that roads are safe during and after the move.

They will help to manoeuvre the vehicle safely around corners, temporarily removing signs and lights, placing steel supports over existing drainage and will then put everything back in place once the superload has passed through.

This is a complex operation and for everyone’s safety, we ask the community to stay well clear when the superload is in transit and when parked.

There will be no designated viewing opportunities available.
