A QUIET Store Cattle Sale at the Wangaratta Livestock Exchange last Friday saw prices remain steady as producers start to prepare for feature sales in February.

Some 200 head were sold, with most producers holding back cattle for the feature weaner sales set for February 1 and February 3.

Average prices saw $1660 per head for 400kg Angus steers and $1100 for 300kg Angus heifers.

AWN cattle agent Peter Dargan said the "odds and sods" of presented cattle Friday morning followed exactly where agents expected in current market prices.

"It was extremely high, there's been a correction in the fat market and that's flowed to the store market," he said.

"The feed lotters are the ones that drove the market bigger to start with, and they're a bit inactive at the moment or on a very reduced rate, and that's taken a hole out of the market."

North Wangaratta farmer Brian Bourke yarded 15 head of Hereford and Angus cattle averaging 447kg, looking to clear up room for this season's calves.

"I would've liked to have kept them but I've started calving already... we've just got to concentrate now on calving all of the cows down and look after the other stock I've got from last year," he said.

Mr Bourke said he was reasonably pleased with his return of $1770 per head, considering where the current market is placed.

"It's a bit of a shock compared to what it was last year," he said.

"I'm hoping the market will improve, I don't know what to expect, we'll just have to wait and see."

Mr Dargan said there will be an expected 7500 head of steers and heifers to be presented over the feature weaner February sales in Wangaratta next week.
