THE Oxley hall was alive with the sound of ping pong balls being belted around and stroked in last Monday's night of fun.
And the smiles on the faces of all 20 players were a true indication of the interactions and enjoyment the weekly table tennis provides.
It was a night with the birds, love birds, chooks, blue bonnets and high flyers of all varieties, and the sky was the limit.
In a very 'eggciting' game, 'old chooks' Lucy Uebergang and Julie Reid tried to rattle the cage of 'spring chickens' Janet Heath and June Uebergang.
The feathers were flying from the first stroke, as each pair fed each other with 'pellets' and grass roots shots to and from all parts of the table and beyond.
A great scramble which eventually saw Heath and Uebergang Snr win in a boil–over 21–20.
After removing his golden fleece, Jason Mullins joined forces with Richard 'the lion heart' Morgan, to take on 'first man' Adam Bosley and 'the bloke across the road' Manni Poulos in what proved to be the event of the night.
With all players displaying agility, ability, tenacity and velocity, it emulated Marc Antony's words to Cleopatra: "we didn't come here to talk."
Putting all her knowledge and strengths into the contest, Dianne Feldtman lined up with Brian 'from back of' Bourke, to face up to the 'flying blue bonnets', Eamon Mullins and William Bonwick.
Spectators were well entertained by all four players' cutting and slicing before ripping powerful drives.
Following a well–earned win by Feldtman and Bourke, a re–match was penciled in for next week.
When the 'girls at the front counter', Kate Cole, and the multitalented Phoebe Bosley joined forces to take on 'love birds' Archie Crispin and his girl–friend, Charlie Maclean, it was a game of 'fun for all'.
Making her debut performance at the sport, Maclean quickly showed there was plenty of untapped talent just waiting for the lid to come off, when she and Crispin took the game right up to Cole and Bosley.
But having experience up their sleeves and knowing their way around the table, Cole and Bosley took the honours.
It was a 'family affair' when Janet and Don Heath, and Deb Humphries and Martin Butcher met at the table for a game that everyone certainly enjoyed every cent of their $2 entry fee for the night.
From the word 'go', the ladies were the driving forces as they encouraged and instilled confidence in their 'boys', to give the game their best shot in the ensuing battle.
When asked who won, hugs and kisses said it all – love all.
And following the night's hard work at the tables, everyone enjoyed recapping the night's activities, while also enjoying a cuppa and 'the best home–mades in town'.
Adults and secondary schoolers of all ages and abilities are welcome to join the group, which meets at the Oxley hall each Monday night, beginning at 7pm – bring your own bat and $2 entry fee.
