GROUND damage caused by burst water lines under Wangaratta WJ Findlay Oval should not prevent the local derby between the Rovers and Magpies being played at the venue on the Queen's Birthday weekend.
The first water leakage was noticed on Saturday morning before the Rovers' matches against Corowa–Rutherglen commenced and the water supply was swiftly turned off.
Club football operations manager Barry Sullivan said they noticed there was a growing wet area which was forming a bubble in the ground.
"We contacted council and they were really responsive as we didn't want to call the game off," he said.
"Council turned the water off and we got through the day fine."
But in another turn of events, council reports that in a separate incident, overnight on Monday, an 80mm PVC line that feeds the sprinklers on the oval burst.
A council spokesperson said the oval was fine on Monday afternoon, as one of the groundskeepers watered the pitch on the oval.
"The line feeds the sprinkler via council storage tanks behind the aquatics centre and the tank system maintained enough pressure to cause a pimple–like formation that developed," he said.
"Council staff, with the assistance of contractors, carried out pipe repairs that were completed on Tuesday and groundskeepers installed turf to the affected area yesterday."
The club has been training on the Barr Reserve 2 oval this week to allow surface repair works by council.
Mr Sullivan said with the bye this week and an away game against North Albury next week, the ground should be right to play on by June 11.
