NINETIES rock has been resurrected this year thanks to the return of one iconic Australian group; Grinspoon, bringing you new music as they debut their first album in 12 years for their Whatever, Whenever, Wherever tour.
The Aussie legends reunited in 2017, going on to celebrate their past hits with fans around the country, before announcing a new album, four years in the making, to mark a new era of Grinners.
I know at least one old rocker in Wangaratta who was elated at the news…and my dad was even more excited when I told him I’d spoken to their bass guitarist.
Band member Joe Hansen said a few tracks have made it out of the archives; puzzle pieces fitting nicely into a high-energy, raucous album that gets you back to the original Grinspoon sound.
“The last few records we’ve released were new horizons, musically, but for this one the idea was to get back to original Grinspoon sound with a slap-you-in-the-face approach,” he said.
“A few tracks Phil had written a long time ago and we came back to them, had another look and tweaked them a little.
“Touring and playing together is pretty familiar for us; we know what we’re doing and how we do it and, if anything we just tried to relax a bit and enjoy it this time.
“With some of the other records, especially towards our last few, you can start to overthink things and the studio for us can be quite a stressful environment with disagreements and everyone throwing around ideas.
“So this time we decided to just chill and enjoy it.
“Lets just enjoy hanging out, so we went down to the Mornington Peninsula and went on bushwalks between takes and went to the coast.
“We were living in an AirBNB together, cooking barbecues and spending time with each other.”
Touring the country in a van and performing five gigs a week may not be your idea of a good time, but for the Grinners it’s something to be excited about.
“We’re all really excited about it, we haven’t done a van tour in a long time,” Mr Hansen said.
“Sitting in the van and driving hundreds of thousands of miles with my good mates in Grinspoon, seeing lots of places and seeing our fans; it’s great.
“I think when you get into a venue and a live band is playing, the energy is there.
“Everyone is playing their instruments, the crowd brings energy, the band brings energy and a live show is all about that.
“I think for a lot of younger people these days the gig scene maybe isn’t quite as prevalent as it used to be and once you’re in amongst it, its hugely fun and a good escape.
“We would love to see people supporting us and supporting live music.”
