MELBOURNE metropolitan residents trying to escape the COVID-19 lockdown better have a good hiding spot if they’re planning on coming to Wangaratta.

Victoria Police now have the power to fine these people $4957 and Assistant Commissioner Rick Nugent has warned of a series of checkpoint and ‘back road’ checks out of Melbourne.

If illegal visitors to regional areas slip the city checkpoints they’re not home and hosed, as automated number plate recognition will be used, as will a series of checks by local police at bus depots and train stations, cafes, restaurants, pubs, caravan parks and camping grounds.
