Cathedral College Wangaratta student Rani Meisinger has extra support in place as she heads into her VCE years in 2025, having been selected for the University of Melbourne Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program.

Rani, who has just finished year 10 at CCW and is looking forward to the challenge of year 11 next year, will be part of the class of 2027 intake for the young scholars program.

The 16-year-old high-achiever was encouraged by her school to apply for the opportunity, which offers extra support over the VCE period as well as a glimpse of university, and she was thrilled to hear her application had been successful among a pool of more than 2300 applicants.

"Over the two years, I'll get to experience university life, and take part in workshops and day and overnight activities at Melbourne University," she said.

"There will be the opportunity to take part in unit 3/4 VCE revision lectures to prepare for exams, and to have access to the Melbourne University library."

The university's library is the largest library collection in the southern hemisphere, featuring specialist resources in law, business, chemistry, physics, architecture, biomedicine, fine arts and music.

"I'm very excited, keen to see what this program has to offer, and excited to connect with other like-minded students," Rani said.

"I'm lucky to be part of it."

Rani said she was fortunate to already have a strong support network, both through her parents and family, and through Cathedral College, but involvement in the Kwong Lee Dow would further bolster her preparations for VCE.

It also holds her in good stead beyond her secondary studies, with program participants potentially eligible for a guaranteed place in an undergraduate course, financial assistance to move to Melbourne, and an overseas scholarship if they decide to study at the University of Melbourne.

With plans to pursue an interest in psychology through her tertiary studies, Rani said these opportunities would be welcome.

Having completed her year 10 classes on Wednesday, she's now looking forward to the Christmas/New Year break with family and friends, ahead of participation in the Young Scholars Welcome Event at the University of Melbourne's Parkville campus in January.
