February 4 – One Day Masters

OVENS Valley United are A grade one-day premiers for the ¬first time in the club’s history.

The maiden title came from Sunday’s clash with Rovers United Bruck, with the Tigers chasing down the Hawks’ 98 run total with three wickets in hand and more than six overs still to come.

Conner Forde and James Neary struck early with the ball after the Tigers lost the toss, with RUB floundering at 3/18.

April 3 - Annual Easter tennis comp the ‘best tournament ever’

THE Myrtleford Lawn Tennis Club’s most recent annual Easter Tournament has been hailed as one of the best iterations the club has ever run, after a phenomenal long weekend of tennis action.

Hundreds of players flocked to the club’s pristine and well-maintained courts over the four days of competition.

The men’s open singles title was taken out by Bendigo’s Aiden Fitzgerald, the eighth time he’s triumphed at Myrtleford, while the women’s open singles title was claimed by Kelly Bucewicz, her fifth crown at the tournament.

May 29 - ‘Harro’ the hero in game 400

ANY milestone game is worthy of celebration and to bring up 400 matches is certainly no di¬fferent.

But for Paul Harrison, who reached the rare landmark for Bright’s reserves last Saturday, the four quarters panned out better than he or any of his teammates could have dreamed of.

In true Harrison style, he stood up when it mattered most.

June 19 – Fighting Savoy women break Heart

A TREMENDOUS effort in the second half has seen Myrtleford Savoy comprehensively take down Wodonga Heart in their division one women’s match on Sunday.

After conceding a goal early, Myrtleford fought back hard to eventually run out winners 3-1.

Savoy’s defence rallied after Heart’s Gemma Berto found the back of the net, while a massive individual e¬ffort from Gabby Paglia on the goal line prevented a two-goal deficit.

July 17 – Ben a two-time Olympian

MYRTLEFORD product Ben Buckingham has been named in Australia’s athletics squad for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, his second trip to the biggest stage on Earth.

Buckingham, 32, was selected in the 75-member athletics squad as one of two Aussie men set to contest the 3000m steeplechase.

A¬fter running a 8:20.95 at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, a personal best at the time and fourth-fasted in Australian history, Buckingham narrowly missed out on a finals berth, coming 22nd overall.

August 14 – Savoy win the league

AFTER almost 22 gruelling weeks of competition, they’ve finally done it - Myrtleford Savoy are AWFA division one men’s champions.

Myrtleford secured their standing on top of the table with an emphatic win over struggling rivals Wangaratta City, destroying the Devils 6-0 at South Wangaratta on Sunday.

Needing a draw at minimum against the second last ranked Wangaratta to secure the title, Savoy were heavy favourites heading into the encounter.

September 18 – Grand final heartbreak for Myrtleford Saints

A SLOW start from Myrtleford’s B grade netballers proved to be costly in their 44-50 O&M grand ¬ final loss to Wodonga at Lavington Sportsground on Sunday.

The Saints were jumped in the first half to find themselves down by nine goals at halftime and despite a fightback signature to their finals series, they couldn’t recover.

Coach Tina Way said it was a tale of two halves as her team were left devastated with the loss.

December 4 – Saints secure home semi-final after flawless CBL season

MYRTELFORD’S CBL squad rounded off their perfect season with back-to-back wins on the weekend to finish the regular season undefeated on top of the ladder.

The Saints hosted Shepparton Gators on Saturday evening, taking the win 69-49, before backing up and taking on Wallan Panthers on Sunday, which they won 77-40.

Having narrowly downed the Gators in their first clash back in October, Myrtleford had their work cut out for them, but a massive first half settled the nerves.
