The Wangaratta High School symphonic and stage bands proudly completed their annual tour, this year travelling to Canberra for six action-packed days of music, learning and adventure.
The touring group included 27 students, four staff, and three volunteers, led by learning area leader and leading teacher Scott Solimo, who not only conducted both bands, but also served as bus driver and head chef.
The tour was coordinated by instrumental music program leader Keyna MacPhee.
Across the week, students delivered five performances: three extended public sets, a primary school performance, and a professional workshop.
"After travelling on Sunday, the group was up bright and early Monday for a three-hour workshop with the Royal Military College Band (currently based in Fyshwick during Duntroon renovations)," Keyna said.
"This invaluable session set a high standard for the week ahead.
"The bands then performed at the warm and welcoming Hawker Primary School in Belconnen, before returning to the caravan park for a well-earned feast; 82 homemade chicken parmigianas, all cooked from scratch by Mr Solimo."
On Tuesday, students delivered their full repertoire amid the gusty winds of the Australian National Botanic Gardens, performing in the scenic Crosbie Morrison Lawn Amphitheatre to not only a great audience of people, but also some reptilian guests as well.
Afterwards, they enjoyed an informative and inspiring tour of the Australian Institute of Sport.
Although Wednesday held no performances, it was packed with learning experiences.
Students toured Parliament House, where they were greeted by local federal MP for Indi Helen Haines.
The group then visited the National Zoo and Aquarium before spending an exciting afternoon exploring Questacon.
Thursday’s sunshine created the perfect backdrop for a lively public performance at the Canberra City Walk Shopping Complex.
"Students received glowing feedback from audiences and even welcomed listeners who had first seen them at the Botanic Gardens earlier in the week," Keyna said.
"Friday marked the final day of a long and rewarding week, and it delivered a truly unforgettable moment for the senior students.
"The bands performed in the Great Hall of Parliament House, and thanks to the fortunate timing of an extended parliamentary sitting they were honoured to have Dr Haines and Federal Minister for Education Jason Clare in attendance.
"Both offered kind words about the performance and the value of music education.
"This performance was also especially significant as it farewelled the year 12 musicians, whose final performance with Wangaratta High School was (remarkably) on the Parliament House stage, in front of the Federal Minister for Education."
The WHS graduating students are Alicia Snowdon, Tara Wevers, Amelia Roberts, Swaye Frankland, and Anthony Chisholm.
"We congratulate them warmly and thank them for their dedication, leadership, and musicianship throughout their years in the program," Keyna said.
"The 2025 Canberra Tour was an inspiring and memorable experience for all involved.
"Our students represented Wangaratta High School with talent, resilience and enthusiasm, and we extend sincere thanks to the staff, volunteers, families, and hosts who helped make this tour possible."
