WBBL fully–televised in new schedule

The Women's Big Bash League will have a fully–televised season for the first time as part of a restructured schedule to deal with the COVID–19 pandemic. Cricket Australia confirmed on Thursday the tournament will go ahead with all 59 matches being played in every state besides NSW and Victoria. The first 22 games will be played in Tasmania starting next Thursday, before the tournament moves to Perth. The competition will be completed in Queensland and Adelaide. But it is the move to a fully–televised season that is the exciting news. Targeted as the next goal by the league at the end of last summer, the initial schedule had 47 of the matches shown on Foxtel. But that number has now increased to all 59 as part of the rejigged schedule, with 24 to also be simulcast on Seven. It marks a significant increase on the 10 that were shown in the competition's first year and 36 last year. "The WBBL is Australia's highest rating sporting league for women and the world's best cricket league for women," BBL boss Alistair Dobson said. "We owe it to our players and loyal fans to deliver a full schedule, and today's announcement further strengthens this." Under the new schedule, the finals will still be played over the last weekend in November. A new finals system will see first automatically qualify for the final, while third and fourth play off for the right to face second in the preliminary. – AAP
