It will be a frenetic start to the A grade WDCA T20 competition this Saturday, with six matches of power hitting and sharp bowling on the cards.

For the next four weeks, the top level of senior cricket in the region will play the game’s shortest format, culminating in a grand final on 20 December.

This weekend kicks the completion off in style, and for the as-yet undefeated Rovers United Bruck, it means clashes against both Yarrawonga Mulwala and City Colts.

While they’ve had the run of form through the earlier one-dayers, RUB skipper Jeremy Wilson said he and his side were looking forward to playing the condensed format.

“We’re really excited, we’ve got a pretty full squad to choose from,” he said.

“No one’s played a lot of T20 cricket, but we think we’re pretty well-placed from a batting and bowling point of view.

“The idea is not to get too carried away with it, about trying to belt the ball.”

Despite Wilson’s calm mentality, the Hawks are more than capable of belting a huge score.

Opener Charith Perera (239 runs @ 59.75) and all-rounder Jacob Schonafinger (111 @ 55.5) are both coming off recent scores of more than 90 in the one-day competition, but the batting firepower from the boys in yellow is widespread.

“Our top order is pretty powerful, we’ll obviously make a few changes here and there,” Wilson said.

“We get Jordie Hansted to come in, he’s played plenty of cricket so he’ll slip into the top of the order somewhere, we’re pretty excited to see what he can do for us, partnering up with Chazzy [Charith Perera] and Ryan [Collier] as well.

“Schona’s coming off a 95, he’ll slip into the top order somewhere as well.

“Reidy McNamara’s probably not known for his T20 stuff because he probably hasn’t played a lot, but he’s got plenty of tricks and he’s a young talent.

“Our top five, six, seven, eight, we’re pretty confident will be able to make a score.”

T20 cricket is lauded for its big hits and flashy shots, but the precision of fielding and tight bowling can be the difference between a win and a loss in the 20 over game.

“Last week was a really good opportunity, especially late in the game, for the boys to realise that dot balls are actually important,” Wilson said.

“You’ve got to be on, that’s what I’ve been telling the boys, when you’re in the field you’ve got to be on every ball, you’ve got to be charging, you’ve got to be trying to cut the angles.

“It might just be about cutting a two to a one that could be the difference in the end.

“There are going to be opportunities for run outs, we’ve actually been pretty good in the field this year, we’ve got a few run outs, and I think the teams who field the best probably win more games.”

Rovers United Bruck kick off their T20 campaign on Saturday from 12.30pm at Norm Minns Oval against Yarrawonga Mulwala, before taking on City Colts at 4pm at Barr Reserve 2.
