Students at Wangaratta District Specialist School are busy tending to their worm farms funded by a recent $5000 Rural City of Wangaratta community grant.
The grant for the 'Burrowing into Our Community' program enabled the purchase of worm farms for the school's Wangaratta and Benalla campuses to support the weekly WDSS fishing club.
Senior students involved in the club are able to model safe, respectful behaviour to younger students, some of whom are working on engaging more successfully in their schooling.
Through the council grant, youngsters are working at breeding European Nightcrawlers - both to supply their own fishing program and potentially as a micro-business which will help fund their fishing club supplies.
Teacher Matt Baxter said students involved in the fishing club were now gearing up for cod opening, and looking forward to the chance to spend a day by the Ovens River in early December.
