Current Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Irene Grant will put her hand up again for the top job on Tuesday night with the annual election of mayor and deputy.
Mayor Grant believes she has the majority to support her tilt at another year in the job, but indicated she would like it to be her last as mayor.
"One of the reasons for me putting my hand up is to ensure an experienced transition from CEO Brendan McGrath to a new CEO and that's going to be a pretty significant process," she said.
"I think to have an inexperienced mayor would make it difficult for them."
One of Cr Grant's first jobs as a council administrator in 2013, alongside Alisa Fox and Rod Roscheller, was to hire a new CEO.
The successful candidate was Mr McGrath a vacancy made after Doug Sharp departed.
But Cr Grant is not counting her chickens yet, as she had a discussion with a former mayor from another municipality who thought they had the numbers but lost the vote on the night.
"Local government is like any other form of government and there are people who think they should be (elected) but not everyone can be," she said.
Once the mayor is elected, nominations for a deputy mayor will be put forward and votes will be cast by all councillors.
Council veteran Harvey Benton currently holds the position of deputy mayor.
Council appointments to portfolios will be made and two councillors will be appointed to the audit and risk committees.
The mayoral election has been weaved into the general business of the November ordinary council meeting to be held at the Wangaratta council chambers at 6pm on Tuesday.
