A VISITING hiker spent her Sunday night with search and rescue officers as her company after becoming disoriented during a walk on Mount Bogong.

The 52 year old woman from Castlemaine called local emergency services at around 7.30pm Sunday night after losing her way off an obscured section of Grey Hills Track and becoming dangerously close to running out of water and daylight.

Senior Sergeant Doug Incoll of Bright police said the Air Wing Search and Rescue helicopter was unable to airlift her out that night but dropped members of the team to keep her company before she was safely airlifted out around 9.30am Monday morning.

“It’s a timely reminder to be fully prepared when you’re hiking, especially if going solo,” he said.

“It’s very fortunate she had a mobile phone in service and could contact us and share her location.

“We also advise considering a satellite phone for no service areas, carrying extra water and food incase things go south.”
