Northeast Health Wangaratta (NHW) presented a strong and positive year of achievements at its 153rd annual general meeting, held at the Quality Hotel Wangaratta Gateway on Monday, 8 December.

Board chair Ruth Kneebone and chief executive officer Libby Fifis reflected on NHW’s work across 2024–25, noting significant improvements in patient care, workforce support and financial performance.

The organisation reported steady and sustained demand for services, including over 31,000 Emergency presentations and 76,744 medical imaging presentations, as well as strong surgical activity and consistent maternity services.

Illoura Residential Aged Care recorded 94.5 per cent occupancy, supported by ongoing investment in resident wellbeing and quality standards.

Emergency presentations and community health activity continued to reflect the growing needs of the region, with the AGM noting focused improvements in care flow, access and patient experience.

Progress on NHW’s staff housing development was highlighted as a key milestone for workforce sustainability.

The project is designed to support essential health workers who face local rental and housing pressures, strengthening NHW’s ability to attract and retain staff across clinical and support areas.

The meeting also acknowledged NHW’s work in Aboriginal health, workforce planning and new models of care introduced across the year.

Fundraising remained a vital contributor to patient care enhancements, with strong support from community groups, local businesses and individual donors.

Their efforts helped enable new equipment, service improvements and increased comfort for patients and families.

NHW reported a notable financial turnaround, delivering a $5.5 million operating surplus against the Statement of Priorities and reducing its net deficit from $12.131 million last year to $134,000.

This improvement reflects responsible financial management and strengthened partnerships across the health sector.

A highlight of the meeting was the announcement of two new Life Governors, the organisation’s highest honour recognising exceptional contribution.

Former Theatre Unit manager Lois Foley and former head of General Surgery Peter Thomas were acknowledged for decades of leadership, mentorship and service that has shaped patient care at NHW and across the region.

The AGM also noted the Board Directors’ Scholarship program, which continues to support professional development and emerging leadership within the organisation.

Ruth Kneebone closed the meeting by thanking NHW staff, volunteers, partners and the wider community for their support.

She reflected on the organisation’s ongoing commitment to safe, high-quality care and its focus on strengthening services for the people of North East Victoria.
