The influx of new members on the Business Wangaratta committee should prove a shot in the arm for local businesses, and the rural city as a whole.
For a number of years the committee had struggled to attract active business members, particularly from the next generation of movers and shakers so the election of Casey McPhail as chair, Dean Rees as vice-chair, Neil Membrey as treasurer, and Emma Merlo as secretary gives the representative body leadership at the next level.
They are experienced, successful operators who not only have the expertise to make a difference, but importantly the network of contacts locally and further abroad, to get things happening.
The addition of another 40 members who also signed up for the AGM makes Business Wangaratta a truly representative body and as strong a voice for local businesses we have had since pre-covid.
While the previous board fought on gamely to keep the organisation going, without substantial backing from local businesses it sometimes struggled to gain attention.
It is challenging to say the least to be an effective lobby group if you don't have the numbers to back yourself up.
Local businesses need a strong voice not only to ensure they are heard at all levels of government, but also to help promote existing businesses to the community and to attract and assist new businesses coming to the area.
Activity creates activity and an active Business Wangaratta should be a big positive for all parts of the local community.
