WANGARATTA Little Athletics Centre delivered another weekend of great performances at the state track and field championships held at Lakeside Stadium in Albert Park on the weekend.

After qualifying through the Northern Country Region carnival held in February, 16 athletes headed to Melbourne to compete across 38 events at the coveted state finals, providing a fitting climax to another great season of Little Athletics.

Melbourne delivered perfect weather conditions for the weekend of competition with Wangaratta athletes stepping up and performing well against the best in the state.

Personal bests were the order of the weekend resulting in several top 10 finishes, a swag of medals and exceptional demonstrations of sportsmanship.

Wangaratta's medal count totalled nine, including seven gold and two bronze with medal winning performances from:

Ashleigh Carty (U16G) gold 100m, 200m, long jump and bronze triple jump;

Edyn Hill (U16G) bronze 1500m;

Callum Bott (U14B) gold 400m and 200m;

Charlie Haring (U14B) shot put;

Dermot Mitchell (U12B) gold 100m.

Team Wangaratta delivered 26 personal best performances, with athletes finishing in the top 10 in 20 events.

"We are extremely proud of the effort, performance and conduct of all our athletes," Troy Lewis, team manager, said.

"Simply qualifying for the weekend places our athletes in the top 24 – and then producing 26 personal best performances from 38 events is an amazing result and a fantastic way for our athletes to finish the season.

"While our team was slightly smaller than previous years, the overall result was in line with our best club performance to date."

In her final little athletics championship, U16 athlete Ashleigh Carty delivered the standout performance for the weekend with three gold medals, one bronze and secured the Victorian Best Performance for the U16G long jump for the second time a month.

Xavier Pitt (U16), competing by invitation, also rounded out his Little Athletics career producing podium finishing performances in the 800m and javelin including a massive throw of 55.20m – almost 2m past the current state mark for the age group.

Wangaratta Little Athletics will conclude the 2021–22 season on Friday, March 25, with season presentations being held on Sunday, April 3.
