It will be an uphill battle for Rovers United Bruck in their A grade T20 showdown with Ovens Valley United this weekend, with both teams’ seasons essentially on the line.
Due to the condensed nature of the four-round T20 season, every single game has immense ramifications on who can or can’t make it to the top two and the final.
The Hawks are currently second on the ladder with one loss from their three games played, even on points with Ovens Valley, who had the bye last weekend.
RUB skipper Jeremy Wilson said his team had to win this weekend to keep the dream alive, but the Tigers would not make it easy.
“Off the back of a really good win last week we are looking forward to another big game against a quality opponent,” he said.
“We've got ourselves back into the competition and we can really put ourselves in a strong position to make the final if we win this week.
“It's a real competition-defining match because Ovens also need to win.
“Arguably they've got the best player in the competition in Geeth [Alwis] but they also have a lot of really good role players that can take games away from you on their day.
“They've obviously got the two Poms [Joe Monk and Joel Jordan] that are new this year as well.
“Overall, they are probably stronger than last year, so we need to start well to put them on the back foot.
“If we can play to the areas we know we can, then I'm confident we can get the job done.”
After falling to ladder-leaders Yarrawonga Mulwala in the opening match of the T20 competition, with a number of poor performances with the bat, the Hawks have strung together some consistent results to see them challenge for a spot in the finals.
Wilson said composure with the bat was crucial is posting quality scores in the shortest form of the game.
“I think the thing we learnt very quickly from the first game is that batting isn't just about blasting away,” he said.
“We probably were a bit too reckless against Yarra and handed our wickets away too easily.
“Against Colts we were better but then against Beechworth last week it was a lot more complete.
“While we made a big score, it was more about capitalising on our strengths rather than trying to blast them away.”
With just two matches left before the final, both sides will be eager to strike the first blow and further their case.
Rovers United Bruck take on Ovens Valley United at Myrtleford’s McNamara Reserve on Saturday, with the first ball set for 12.30pm.
