Junior football reform as senior leagues work to ensure pathway alignment

Junior footy in the North East and Border region will function slightly differently behind the scenes in 2027, with several moves already made to ensure efficient governance and structure. The Wangaratta and District Football League (WDJFL) has reformed its board of management, following a period of time operating under an Advisory Group model. There had already been movement in this space in the last few months, with the Ovens and King Football Netball League (OKFNL) signing a Memorandum of Understanding to take over administration and operational managements of the WDJFL back in July. The newly reformed board will be responsible for the governance and strategic direction of the league, while day-to-day administration and operational functions will be delivered through the OKFNL under a service agreement model. This approach mirrors previous arrangements successfully utilised in partnership with AFL North East Border and allows the WDJFL to benefit from dedicated administrative support while maintaining its independence as a standalone competition. In a statement released earlier this week, the WDJFL recognises junior football is a vital part of the football pathway and that ongoing collaboration between leagues, clubs, volunteers, players, parents, and football administrators is essential to providing positive experiences and opportunities for young participants. “As an independent league, the WDJFL remains committed to working collaboratively with all key football stakeholders across the Wangaratta and district catchment,” the statement read. “The league looks forward to continuing to provide a safe, enjoyable and inclusive environment for young players while building stronger connections across the broader football community.” Neighbouring Albury Wodonga Junior Football League (AWJFL) is following suit, announcing a similar administration model which will see the Ovens and Murray Football Netball League (OMFNL) assume administrative and operational responsibilities for the AWJFL through a service agreement model. The move was made to support the ongoing operations and long-term sustainability of junior football across the Albury, Wodonga, Corowa and Yarrawonga region. The arrangement provides strong continuity for clubs, players and volunteers, while creating opportunities for greater collaboration between the competitions across the region, and is expected to strengthen the delivery of football programs, improve operational efficiencies and enhance the overall experience for participants at the grassroots level. “With seven OMFNL clubs having a junior affiliation with the AWJFL, it is seen as a critical pathway for the majority of our clubs,” OMFNL general manager Kane Arendarcikas said. “We look forward to working with the AFLNEB and AWJFL on the final stages of the transition process and welcome any opportunity that plays a role in strengthening junior football in the region.”
