Lady Devils advance in finals

The world-conquering season continues for Wangaratta City FC’s division two women’s side, who won through their quarter final after a 1-0 thriller with Melrose FC. The league champions faced the lowest-ranked qualifier on the turf at Ian Barker Fields on Sunday morning, but from the quality of the football, it could’ve been the grand final. Both sides were evenly matched on offence and defence, with the scoreboard reading 0-0 after the first 45 minutes. However, an own goal from Melrose in the 49th minute, orchestrated by Wangaratta’s Ella Antonello out wide, was the opening the Lady Devils needed, able to nullify any counterattacks and run out winners after 90 minutes. Coach Kristy Mellor said it was a gutsy win against a fine opponent. “Melrose, while placed eighth [coming into finals], are a very good team,” she said. “They had seven draws this year, including one with us. “They sit very defensively and clear their lines effectively. “There was no score in the first half, and it took an amazing strike from the right corner from Ella Antonello to break the deadlock. “Once we got ahead, we held the game tight. “We played more attacking football into the wings, and the last 15 minutes saw us put lots of shots at goal, and put them under a lot of pressure. “It was a good win from the girls, a hard-fought match to get to the semis.” The Lady Devils take on Wodonga Diamonds this Sunday in the semi-finals.
