Lakers lay down early marker in GF rematch, Priest brings up season’s first century

Yarrawonga Mulwala made an early season statement with a 65-run drubbing of Rovers United Bruck in the grand final rematch on Saturday. Jacob Schonafinger (1/32) made the first breakthrough after RUB were sent in to bowl first at Stan Hargreaves Oval. But a 71-run stand between Brock McCabe (71) and Reid Clarke (41) took the innings away from the travelling Hawks, needing to chase 5/206 after Will Wheeler and Zac Fraser piled on runs late. In response Rovers failed to muster any momentum losing consistent wickets on their way to being bowled out for 141 within 40 overs. McCabe was also the standout with the ball for the Lakers, taking 2/21. At the Benalla Gardens, the WDCA season saw its first centurion as Jonty Priest carried the bat en route to his 113* which led Benalla to a 47-run win over Delatite. Priest was proactive with his running between the wickets early in his innings until his boundary hitting came to the fore after drinks, facing 123 balls and hitting 12 fours. Delatite wouldn’t be daunted by the massive run chase, as their own opening bat Earl Ree-Goodings piled on 70 runs off 91 balls in reply. But his wicket in the 31st over made the task too big for the Devils who finished with 9/198 in reply. It was also runs galore at the Barr Reserve in Wangaratta with Beechworth chasing down 210 with eight balls to spare against City Colts. GET LOW: Kent Braden made a solid start at the top of the order for City Colts. Beechworth’s top order, who struggled against Benalla in round one, came to play on Saturday as young Rama Schultz (50) and Brenton Surrey set the tone with a second-wicket 90-run partnership.
