Magpies finals run ends in heart-stopper

Wangaratta Magpies' run in the A grade finals was short-lived after a heart-stopping three goal defeat in Sunday's elimination final at the hands of North Albury, 38-41. It was a bittersweet loss for the Magpies who had only confirmed their place in the playoffs in the final home and away match of the season after a four game winning streak, including victories over two other finalists still in contention, including North Albury. Despite the loss, coach Shea Cunningham was understandably proud of the squad's effort on the day and throughout the season. "It was another incredibly tight contest and probably a fitting reflection of how even the competition has been all year," Cunningham said. "In the end, I think the difference was that while we created plenty of opportunities through the work of our defenders and midcourt, North's goalers simply didn't miss when it mattered. "We were able to win a lot of ball back and generate turnover opportunities, but they were very efficient at converting their chances." The Magpies had seven more scoring shots than the Hoppers but were unable to match their opponent's accuracy. Leading punisher for North Albury was goal shooter Lily Kelly who scored a remarkable 35 goals from 37 shots at 95 per cent accuracy. Cunningham said despite the result, her defence had acquitted themselves in style. "I thought our defensive end was outstanding," she said. "They put enormous pressure on North's attack line all game and were a big reason we stayed in the contest. "Claire Wilson [13 goals] also had a huge impact when she came on in the third term. "Her energy and influence on the scoreboard played a major role in giving us the opportunity to level the scores late in the third quarter." The match also marked the end of Cunningham's role in the top job with the Magpies' A grade. The departing coach reflected on the year that was with some pride. "Looking back on the season, I'd describe it as a year of transition and growth," Cunningham said. "We had a number of younger players take significant steps forward and gain valuable experience at A grade level, while our senior players provided terrific leadership and guidance throughout the year. "While we're disappointed not to still be playing, there is a lot for the club to be excited about moving forward." Although the A grade season has finished, Cunningham said the squad would remain involved supporting the other grades still competing. "We'll continue to get behind our remaining teams," she said. "Our C grade side will play this Saturday, while our 15s, 17s and B grade teams are all in action on Sunday. "The A grade group will continue to support those teams all the way through the finals campaign." Cunningham said she had enjoyed her time at the club immensely. "I've had three fantastic years with the club and I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to work with such a committed playing group, support staff and wider netball community," she said. "Right now, my focus is on supporting our remaining finals teams and then spending more time with my family after a busy few years of travelling to coach. "I'll always be grateful for my time at the Magpies. "I'd just like to thank everyone involved in the club for their support during my time here. "It's been a privilege to be part of the Wangaratta Magpies, and I'm proud of what this group has achieved together." The Magpies C grade, who were minor premiers, face arch-rival Rovers in Saturday's second semi-final at at the John Foord Oval, Corowa, at 11.30am. On Sunday at WJ Findlay Reserve Wangaratta, Magpies B grade meet Wodonga Raiders, the 17s, who defeated Rovers 61-47, face Myrtleford, and the 15s take on Lavington.
