There’s nothing like a social fun night at the local tennis club – social fun and activity, BYO picnic dinner, and a chance to win $1 million.
At Wangaratta Lawn Tennis, Croquet and Pickleball Club’s family fun night this Friday from 5.30pm, on top of the fun for all, the club is hosting their Australian Open 1 Point Slam competition, the first step on the road to Melbourne Park in January.
The AO 1 Point Slam in a new initiative from Tennis Australia in which players at community clubs across Australia battle it out to win a single point to advance.
Players first play Rock, Paper, Scissors to decide if they serve or receive in the one-point match – win the point, win the match and advance.
If players win their community event, they earn a ticket to the state or territory level, with a spot in the AO 1 Point Slam at Rod Laver Arena awaiting the ultimate winner at the state level.
But it’s not just amateurs eyeing the $1 million prize pool for the grand champion – the final of the Million Dollar 1 Point Slam will see 24 pro players compete against 24 amateurs and wildcards from across Australia on Rod Laver Arena in the hope of becoming the champion.
World number one Carlos Alcaraz has already been named as one of the pros who will battle it out in the hope of taking home $1 million in prize money
Even if a WLTCP player doesn’t go all the way, each host of a 1 Point Slam event will go into the draw for the chance to have a player represent them in the Million Dollar 1 Point Slam final on 14 January, 2026.
The host represented by the eventual champion – pro, amateur or wildcard – will win a $50,000 tennis grant.
From 5.30pm-7.30pm, all are welcome to head down to Merriwa Park to witness the action or even sign up and have a go at the AO 1 Point Slam.
Tennis, croquet, and pickleball facilities will be open and free to use, the music will be pumping, the bar will be open and there will be free icy poles for kids – BYO picnic dinner.
