While the rain may have kept some away, there was no escaping the top-notch tennis at the Wangaratta Lawn Tennis, Croquet and Pickleball Club’s senior aggregate play on Saturday. Only five sections turned out for competition, as opposed to the usual seven or eight. Ryan Patterson continued his domination of section one, only dropping nine games on his way to a podium finish 21-9, ahead of Kevin Callahan (20-14). Mark Brown (17-16) had a decent day, while Henry Dean (13-19) and Andrew Lindner (11-24) were up against it. In section two, Dave Postlethwaite took the laurels with a compelling 24-15, accounting for Mario Pane (21-19) and Brian Scobie (19-17). Always in the hunt was Ashley Weston, who finished just out of the top three with 18-20, while Mandy Allen was four games back on 14-23. Andrew Cope was the clear winner of section three, taking top spot by seven games. His score of 24-12 was miles ahead of the competition, with Thomas McDonald (17-19), Mark Gorman (16-20), and John Mansfield (15-21) lagging behind. In section four, Pat Flynn flew the flag with his 24-17, handing Peter Curran (21-20), Greg Renner (19-22) and Alan Busk (18-23) a tennis lesson. It was a thriller in section five, with two tied results and a countback determining final placings. Patrick Oudin and Des Steele couldn’t be separated, sharing the win with their 23-15s. James Wilkinson and Max McAuliffe were also all tied up, coming in with identical scores of 16-20. Carl Cutrona was also in the mix, his 16-24 unfortunately netting him bottom of the pack.
