The Border Triathlon Squad’s women’s and junior triathlon is set to fill Rutherglen full of energy this Saturday.

The Wodonga-based club has been putting in months of preparation for their inaugural event in the heart of the Indigo Shire.

Secretary Nadine Seymour said preparations were coming along well as nearly 170 registrations were recorded up until Wednesday.

“For our first event there will be a lot of people around,” she said.

“We’re very grateful for Indigo Shire Council who have opened up the Rutherglen pool two days early for us to use and we’ve received plenty of support from local businesses.

“We’re very excited for it.”

Of those registered, 108 were going in the senior events while 60 juniors had signed up to jump in the pool, lace on the runners and hop on the bike.

The triathlon will be held all across town, starting with the meeting point at the Rutherglen pool.

The swim will be completed in alternating laps dependent on distance, then out for a bike ride to Herrins Road and back through the township before finishing with a run through the recreations reserve and the golf club.

Distances vary across multiple age groups from age seven to nine who will complete a 500m run, 2km bike ride and 60m swim to the long course 16+ age bracket of a 6km run, 20km bike ride and 400m swim.

There will also be those completing the triathlon in a team, breaking up the three legs between different people.

Ms Seymour said the triathlon was firmly focused on participation and enjoyment.

“Every young athlete will receive a medal for finishing — a well-deserved reward for their effort and determination,” she said.

“The women’s event is designed with inclusivity in mind — you don’t need Lycra, carbon bikes, and there is no pressure.

“Whether you’re taking on your first triathlon or returning for another go, the supportive environment created by the Border Triathlon Squad makes it the perfect opportunity to challenge yourself and have fun doing it.”

On the sidelines, spectators will be welcomed by music, a barbeque from the Rutherglen Rotary Club and the smiles of those who cross the finish line.

The Rutherglen event will be assisted by the local SES and other volunteer organisations and local businesses who are helping promote and deliver the triathlon.

The event begins with the kids starting at 1pm, the short course participants from 3pm and the long course from 3:30pm.
