40 years of Landcare and local group's latest project - Saving Mature Trees

Wangaratta Landcare & Sustainability group has been celebrating 31 years since their launch as part of the historic establishment of Landcare Victoria in 1986 and signalling the launch of their latest project “Saving Mature Trees”. The Wangaratta group is one of 600 member groups of Landcare Victoria which is one of the largest environmental organisations in Victoria. Along with many other Landcare groups in the Ovens Landcare network, these groups empower individuals and communities to make a real and positive difference to their local landscapes. Wangaratta Landcare & Sustainability held a public event on 26 August with renowned tree expert as guest speaker, Dr Greg Moore, who shared his extensive knowledge of large mature trees, their life spans, positive impacts on all communities and environmental sustainability. He spoke to an audience of 65 people including Rural City of Wangaratta Mayor Irene Grant, and councillors Dave Fuller and Tania Maxwell. His call to community was to understand the huge benefit of our trees in Wangaratta. As part of the meeting the Landcare group launched a new project with the aim of registering Wangaratta as a member of the “Tree Cities of the World” project under the auspices of the United Nations and the Arbor Day Foundation. Wangaratta could become just the third city, along with Geelong and Banyule in Victoria, to be registered and demonstrate how much the community values its trees and have a plan to look after them far into the future.
