WHOROULY Memorial Park committee is ready for the Australia Day celebrations to begin with a barbecue breakfast at 9am this Wednesday.

The day that is being put on by the Rural City of Wangaratta will be held at the Whorouly Recreation Reserve, with local community awards to be presented to both junior and senior local achievers.

Event organiser Ruth Costenaro said the committee's main goal is to get "Whorouly together again".

"After the last few years we need to get everyone together outside for a change," she said.

"While the rise of COVID cases have been an issue in the Wangaratta and Alpine shires and has put this event at risk, it is important for it to go ahead for the community.

"We will have a COVID marshal in place and will ensure that all the things that we have been doing for COVID safety will continue."

Ms Costenaro said kids will be entertained with kit making and other activities.

There will be a morning tea of coffee and scones after the awards ceremony for everyone to enjoy as part of the free celebrations.
