KIDS have been having fun on a new, spectacular playground at Apex Park, part of a $1.5 million investment in recreational equipment for the location.
Stuart Thompson Landscapes built the playground and they specialise in kindergartens, primary schools and parklands, backed by 20 years' experience in the field.
The materials for the Apex Park playground were largely sourced locally and the only element not to be was the mouse wheel which came from New Zealand as no one in Australia makes them.
Mr Thompson said indigenous artists in the area created art on the totem poles within the playground and they will also be painting the footpaths at the site as well.
The playground required renewal so it meets Australian safety standards and Mr Thompson said it's one of the better parks he's built in some time.
"We're really rapt with it and I know council is happy with it as well," he said.
"We had our problems along the way, having been flooded out three times and COVID restrictions putting a dampener on everything, so it took a lot longer than expected."
Some people were sad to see the former slide taken down but Mr Thompson said once they saw the new one installed he received great feedback from the community.
The parkour section of the project is scheduled to begin next month and this component has had input from the Victorian parkour body.
It will be built in line with the new Australian standards for parkour parks so Wangaratta will be one of the first in the country to align to these benchmarks.
This will include safety facets that connect to height of apparatus matching the on–ground impact zones' requirements.
"People from the parkour association have been giving us guidance about what to put in there, advising what elements they actually use," Mr Thompson said.
"They are going to try and get people from the association to go to Wangaratta and utilise the park, so it's going to be really good."
