Funding from Give Wangaratta has bolstered the Zonta Club of Wangaratta's efforts to tackle gender-based violence in the community.
Zonta Wangaratta received $1380 in latest round of community grants, which will help it double its 'Orange Up' events which support the internationally recognised ’16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence’ campaign.
After a successful turnout at last year’s ‘Orange Up’ events, they will be introducing an 'Orange Up' golf day, which will be held at the Jubilee Golf Club on 29 November, hitting off at 9.30am.
Patrons are encouraged to wear a pop of orange, a colour symbolic of domestic violence awareness, and enjoy a day out on the putting green in support of this important message.
Zonta Club of Wangaratta president, Elizabeth Wilson, said as a not-for-profit organisation, grant money is an asset in organising and hosting various events and activities.
“The ‘16 Days of Activism’ is a very important time for us and we do quite a lot of different things,” Ms Wilson said.
“And so, the grants we receive go toward a variety of things during the ‘16 days of Activism’ (campaign).
"The funding will go toward purchasing orange clothing to ensure that every attendee can be a part of the message."
Some of the funding will also go toward installing what they call their ‘orange ladies’; wooden orange cutouts in the shape of the female form.
“Last year, we only had five and we just put them in places like the library and the council rooms… just to remind people about domestic violence,” Ms Wilson said.
“And so, we’re having some more ladies made this year which will go further into other places in the community.”
Ms Wilson hopes the club can soon expand these kind of events into other fields in the community with membership growth and through applying for more community grants.
"We rely either on our fundraising activities or grants to be able to run projects like this," Ms Wilson said.
"We'd like to thank Give Wangaratta for giving us that money; we're very appreciative of all the organisations that do offer grant money, it's very good in Wangaratta."
