Work is on track to enable the reopening of Faithfull Street by Friday afternoon - a couple of days ahead of schedule.
The street has been closed since last week to enable the construction of a new raised (wombat) crossing mid-block near Victoria Parade, work that followed a similar project at the Murphy Street end of Ford Street earlier this month.
Early completion of this work will allow the Rural City of Wangaratta to bring forward the start date for the final wombat crossing, which will be located in front of the Wangaratta Government Centre at the Ovens Street end of Ford Street.
This work will now commence on 24 November, three days earlier than planned.
Pending smooth construction progress on this phase of the works, which are being carried out by O'LEX Civil Construction, all road closures for the three raised crossings will be finished by 7 December.
The upgrades aim to increase pedestrian safety at the three key CBD locations, in a project made possible through the Victorian Safe System Pedestrian Infrastructure Program.
A pedestrian-operated traffic signal is also set to be installed in Reid Street, mid-block between Ovens Street and Murphy Street, with these works currently out to tender.
